15 Common Grocery Items Where High Fructose Corn Syrup is Hiding

by Annissa on December 20, 2011 · 7 comments

No High Fructose Corn Syrup! We’ve talked about the dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup a few times here on Cents to Share. I just wanted to briefly show you fifteen items we ourselves would reach for in the grocery aisle, but then set back down after reading the label. It is quite astounding and a little upsetting at times where you find this dangerous sweetener hiding itself these days. We shouldn’t have to worry about what’s in our food!

1. Bread – White and Whole Wheat alike

2. Cereal

3. Breakfast Bars

4. Peanut Butter

5. Graham Crackers

6. Jam/Jellies

7. Ice Cream

8. Granola Bars

9. Yogurt

10. Juice

11. Soda

12. BBQ Sauce

13. Ketchup

14. Whipped Cream

15. Pancake Syrup

The good news, though, is that many companies are recognizing the danger of high fructose corn syrup and are beginning to offer groceries that don’t contain them. Often times when we look at a label and put the item back, there will be another product that actually displays ‘No High Fructose Corn Syrup’ right on the label. This is the way that we vote with our food dollars.

How do you feel about HFCS being in so many common products? Have you tried changing your buying habits to avoid HFCS?

Great list – a lot of stuff on here I dont eat or make myself, so I’m not too concerned. I am curious about the peanut butter though – I buy the kind that you have to stir, and i’m not sure if there is any HFCS in there, but i’ll check when I get home.

I’m not sure on the ‘have to stir’ kind. Sounds to me it’s all natural so the HFCS wouldn’t be there, but I do know some varieties posses it. But you need to be careful when you buy things, something you may think that would be HFCS free (like some brands of peanut butter) may have it lurking inside.

Annissa,

It totally blows me away at how many products now have HFCS in it! It’s in lunch meat, most frozen boxed meat (chicken, burgers, etc.) and I’m fairly certain that it’s in a lot more products today. Like you, I don’t appreciate that the governments are so quick to chance everyone’s health at what cost…..nothing but greed! This world (at least North America) has been sold out to the highest bidder…..can you tell this is one of my peeves? :-)

It really is amazing how much there is. I realize a lot of these are ‘sweet’ foods, but it’s in more that just these, quite more as you mentioned. My purpose for the post was just to state some simple things people may just pick up, especially during holidays, and not realize what’s in it. Thanks for the comment Mary, hope to see you around the site in the future! :)

Thanks for the comment, Chris. I chose this topic mostly because my husband and I are trying to cut HFCS out of our diets. We try to buy foods without it, and it’s been a real eye opener when shopping to find what has actually has it. So, I thought I’d share a short list of items I saw us, and other people in the grocery store, buying commonly.

Definitely are convinced that that you simply stated.
Your favorite justification appeared to be inside the internet the simplest
thing to find out. I present to you, I certainly get annoyed while men
and women think about concerns they’re going to just don’t understand.
