A few days ago, I listed out the things that are important to me, and one of the two primary items included building some sort of secondary income (maybe even replacing my primary income), with something. Currently, the only thing that really appeals to me for making side money is through blogging.
When I started this blog, about a year ago now, I toyed with the idea of making some money off of it, and so threw a few ads on the page. I didn’t want anything that distracted from the content, though, so only have some small ones, which I’m sure you’ve noticed. To day, I’m proud to say, I’ve made about $210.00 off of this site, which is really measly when you think about the course of a year. But on the flip side, when I realize that my primary focus hasn’t been making money, it’s sort of impressive. Most of the money was made right after I wrote the most popular article I’ve ever written, (and may ever write), but I still regularly make between 2 and 10 dollars a month.
The thing is, though, I don’t really want THIS blog to be clogged up with money making ads and such. I want it to stay the way it is, a place where I can write about whatever, whenever, without having to worry about ads, SEO, and the like. SO, I’ve decided to try something a little different.
I present to you my personal Niche Blog Challenge
After doing some research, I’ve decided to go down the road of Niche Blogging.
Definition – To me, a niche blog, or niche site, is a website that covers a very specific topic, and that’s it. It may only be 10 pages in size, but the content is potent, the audience is small to moderate in size, and the competition for competing sites is zero to extremely low.
In order to make a profit from these sites, the target traffic is primarily search traffic, and there are a few tricks that you can use, to bring in a steady stream of search traffic.
I’ve frequented a few blogs over the past year, which I won’t mention at this point, who have tried some pretty neat ideas, and they are making regular, passive income off of less than a dozen sites. The reason that they have more than a few sites, is because each site typically brings in a modest amount, nothing too large.
The low-level details, and progress, will be forthcoming, but here are the high-level details:
My Goal With This Challenge
To build 5 different niche blogs/sites, that bring in a total of $500 a month, by July 1st, 2012.
This goal is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time oriented. (At least to me)
I have been, in the past, the kind of guy that enjoys jumping into the unknown, and I am certainly doing it with this, so I will need all the support I can get. I plan on giving regular updates, and once the sites start coming up, I will be giving out income/stat details, so stay tuned for that, especially if you are interested in doing something like this yourself. Also, I will NOT be directly sharing the URLs to the sites, but I may share photos that have the URL in them, so only the most dedicated of followers will know what the sites are. This is too avoid skewing the results of the traffic, which will be primarily focused on search traffic.
Also, my wife thinks I won’t be able to do this (how supportive!), so that means that I absolutely will accomplish it, because I always like to prove her wrong.
So, how about you, have you ever tried creating Niche Sites/Blogs? Have you ever had success making some income from them?
